Having this puts my mind at rest
I WAS among the first CF sufferers in England to trial the new lung home-testing kit and phone app.
This weekend I took the test and submitted the results to my hospital via the app.
The kit has given me immediate answers on how my lungs are on days when I feel unwell. Until six weeks ago, a lung function test would mean waiting for a hospital appointment, followed by a 90-mile round trip to my CF centre. I’d meet my physiotherapist for less than 10 minutes and come home! Without this spirometer I wouldn’t have had my lungs checked throughout the lockdown as all CF sufferers have been shielding at home and clinic appointments suspended.
It is small, portable and for my use only. It puts my mind at ease. One problem with hospital lung function equipment is it’s shared among all their CF patients and there’s a risk of crosscontamination. The kit just detected a constant drop in lung function, warning me it’s time for antibiotics or steroids. This decline would have otherwise gone unnoticed.
