Injured Briton saved six days after falling to bottom of 13ft well

- By Jan Disley

THIS is the moment a British man was rescued from the bottom of a 13ft well after lying trapped for six days.

Jacob Roberts, 29, stumbled and fell into the pit in Bali as he ran away from a dog that chased him through a nearby village.

He broke his leg in the fall and was unable to climb out of the well, which had steep concrete sides and was almost empty.

He thought to have survived with only a little water and no food is for nearly a week until a local farmer heard his cries and came to his aid.

Jacob was recovering in hospital last night after his ordeal.

The drama unfolded in Pecatu village in the south west of the paradise Indonesian island – which is popular with UK tourists and backpackers.

Search and rescue chief Gede Darmada said the farmer was going to feed his cows when he heard Jacob calling for help on Saturday.

The man alerted emergency services and police officers – wearing personal protective equipment as a precaution – tended to the injured victim at the bottom of the well. Jacob emerged from the pit bare-chested and wearing just jeans and flip flops.

He was strapped into a stretcher by the rescue teams and put into an ambulance.

After Jacob was hauled to the surface, South Kuta police chief Yusak Agustinus Sooai said the Briton looked thin and injured.

Evacuation

He said: “The victim claimed to have been trapped there about six days before an evacuation was carried out by the Basarnas team on Saturday.”

Police took Jacob to BIMC Nusa Dua Hospital for treatment and he is expected to make a full recovery.
