Carlo the key to Dom rising says Lineker

- By David Anderson

DOMINIC Calvert-Lewin can blossom into an England striker under Carlo Ancelotti, says Gary Lineker.

Calvert-Lewin’s form has improved since Ancelotti became Everton manager in December and he has scored eight goals in 11 Premier League starts to take his season’s tally to 15 from 32 games.

Lineker, below, who scored 40 goals for Everton during his one season at Goodison Park in 1985-86, claims the former England Under-21 striker can continue to grow and break through into Gareth Southgate’s senior squad.

He said: “I like the way he’s improving, he’s combative, he holds it up well and can get in the box.”

“He wasn’t scoring as prolifically as you’d like at the start, but he was a young player and, with young players, they either stay there and aren’t going to be quite good enough or they move on – and he is moving on nicely.

“Having someone like Carlo Ancelotti with his experience behind him, hopefully, he will blossom and become a possible England striker if he keeps working at his game and keeps improving.”

He added: “He needs to continue scoring at the rate he was. If you put the numbers on the board, you cannot be ignored.”
