WE all know the past few months have been some of the worst in recent history.
This pandemic has had a devastating impact on our country and our society. Unfortunately, we will be feeling the effects for some time to come.
But it’s so important to remember how far we have come. Just a couple of months ago we were losing more than a thousand people a day to this dreadful virus, the whole country was under strict house arrest and there was no end in sight.
Today, the numbers we are losing are still tragic but there are significantly fewer deaths, hospitalisations and infections. These are now decreasing

Shops have reopened, families are getting back together, and life is returning to some normality.
Millions of people are still struggling, but better times are coming.
Even Premier League football restarted last night. The CEO of my cancer network, and a good friend, is a huge Liverpool fan. I’m delighted for him that the season has been able to restart and barring any spectacular collapse he will be able to see his team finally win the league.
Seeing empty stadiums is a reminder of how far we have to go, but I’m confident fans will be able to support their teams in person sooner than people fear.
For many, just being able to get together with a few friends outdoors and watch the football over the weekend will mean the world to them. What a fantastic time for the pubs to reopen – let’s hope the weather holds out.
Treating cancer has taught me that people can deal with adversity far more easily today if they feel better times are coming. I’m now more optimistic than ever. The country is getting back on its feet and we’re taking some big steps back to normality.
