3 years for ex-head girl in drunken death crash

- By Chris Riches

A FORMER head girl has been locked up for three years for killing a much- loved only son in a drunken crash.

Emily Rogers, 19, was twice the drinkdrive limit when her Suzuki Alto struck Kristian Johnson, 24, as he stepped into a road at 1am.

Rogers was branded selfish and wanton as a judge sent her to a young offenders institute and banned her from driving for four-and-a-half years.

The crash happened in Bacup, Lancashire, last June as Rogers was driving a friend home from a pub.

In a heartbreaking statement Mr Johnson’s mother Paula told Preston Crown Court: “Kristian was my only son. He was my life, my world, my everything. When the police came and told me he was dead I broke down.

“I couldn’t believe that I had lost my child, the one and only thing that I treasured and loved so much.

“I dream of Kristian every night. I see him in the future. I find myself daydreaming about his wedding day, his blond hair and blue eyes. I know he always wanted children.

“No one will ever know what has been taken from me.

“Taken by a wanton illegal act. An act that served no purpose other than to save a taxi fare.”

Judge Andrew Jefferies QC told

Rogers, of Bacup, that a life had been “senselessly lost”.

Despite reading testimonials saying the horror had been out of character he said: “There was absolutely no good reason for you to get behind the wheel.

“Following your shift at work you were persuaded not to leave your car at home but to ferry your friends. It was during the last of the journeys you took that night that you killed Mr Johnson.”

He added: “You were not speeding and were otherwise driving properly.”

After the case, PC Alex Summers said: “No jail term can ever compensate for the loss of a life. But I hope that this sentence can offer Mrs Johnson some chance to move on.”
