Trump rally sparks fears of violence
PRESIDENT Donald Trump’s controversial choice of Tulsa for his first political rally since the coronavirus outbreak has provoked fears of further civil unrest.
With the US leader about to take the stage today in the mainly
Democratic city in Oklahoma, thousands of his supporters have arrived, stoking fears of clashes with anti-racist protesters. The city’s racial
significance dates back to 1921 and the “Tulsa Race Massacre”, when white supremacist mobs attacked black residents.
Yesterday, the city’s Republican mayor G T Bynum declared a civil emergency, citing fears the protests could turn
“extremely violent”. He has even imposed an exclusion zone around the venue – the BOK Center. The President has seen his support diminishing with Democratic White House rival Joe Biden extending his lead to 12 points.
