Boris must just ignore the polls

-

THE REASON Boris has been reluctant to reduce the two-metre rule to just one is apparently because polls say many people are against it.

And I think there are two reasons for that. The first is that some people are still in the grip of an irrational fear and even though deaths are not just back to pre-pandemic levels, but are even lower than they were at this time last year, they remain terrified.

And the second, more sinister, one is that people know when two metres is reduced to one there can be no excuse for anyone in any profession to refuse to go back to work. And I fear some are looking for an excuse.

Boris has to forget what the polls say because the people taking part in them aren’t responsible for Britain’s economic survival.

He is – and he needs to do whatever it takes to get us back on our feet.

SHE WAS 103 so we all knew it was coming. But now that it has it doesn’t make it any easier. Dame Vera Lynn – who wasn’t just the Forces’ Sweetheart but the Nation’s Sweetheart – has gone.

And I know this paper has already written much about the great lady but I just wanted to add my condolences and my thanks to her for helping our boys – and everyone else – get through the war and for her sterling work for veterans since.

She once said: “My songs reminded the boys about what they were really fighting for – precious, personal things rather than ideologies and theories.”

And they did. They were inspirational back then and they are today.

Goodnight, sweetheart…

■ BETTE Midler says she needs a teenager to turn on her Smart TV: “In the old days you only had one remote control. Now there are 15 remotes to wrangle and it’s a trial to just get the TV on and the sound working.”

I know where she’s coming from. One reason I can’t ever divorce The Husband is because if I did, I’d have to give up my job AND watching TV. When my computer goes wrong

I can’t do anything till he fixes it. Ditto for the TV. Technology is the one and only area of my life where I am 100 per cent dependent on a man. And no, I don’t like it – but it’s how it is.
