70-year wedded joy for ‘class enemies’

-

A COUPLE who were sworn enemies at school have celebrated 70 years of wedded bliss.

Osborne and Edith Hancock, both 92, sat next to each other in class when they were 10. Osborne recalled: “She hated me at first, she always copied off me in class.”

They started dating in their late teens but were separated for two years when Osborne was posted to Singapore during service in the RAF.

However they wrote to each other every day, with Osborne saying: “I proposed to her by letter and she accepted by letter. I even sent her £20 to pick her own engagement ring.”

The couple then wed in St Helens, Merseyside, in 1950 and went on to have four children. Now great-grandparents, they celebrated their anniversary with a garden buffet. Edith said: “We’re very much alike and we’re always happy.”
