Match of Day...Express connects footie rivals

- By Claire Donnelly

YOU may think Everton’s “world’s biggest fan” and a “100 per cent” Liverpool supporter may not get on too well.

But Cahill Corner, nine, and Kellise Campbell, 11, found they had more in common than their football shirts suggest.

Chatting before tomorrow’s Merseyside derby, the youngsters opened up about life in lockdown.

On a Zoom call as part of the Daily Express project Britain Connects, held on the weekend of the Great Get Together in memory of the murdered MP Jo Cox, they talked about missing loved ones as well as tomorrow’s big game.

Kellise said: “Coronavirus has ruined everything. It’s like the whole world’s gone on pause.

“It’s hard not being able to see your family. You’re used to being able to see your nan, your aunties, your cousins, every day.

“I miss going to the match, I miss singing You’ll Never Walk Alone. Sometimes I just put it on in my room and shut the door.” Cahill adds: “The worst thing is you have to be home-schooled and there’s no one to play with. I’ve missed watching Everton.”

Both children want to be footballers when they grow up. But their thoughts are dominated by tomorrow’s event. Cahill said: “We’re going to win 2-1. It’s about time we won a derby.” Kellise said: “May the best team win.”

The Express project is bringing together thousands of people with opposing views across the UK.
