Let’s unite to score against racism, say opposing fans

-

MANNY Singh Kang has been to almost every Wolves game since he was 16.

Now 47, he takes sons Satnam, 15, and Jeevan, 20 to matches in their replica shirts, club scarves and yellow turbans.

Manny is also part of the Wolves Foundation, the club’s charity, and he has been a fundraiser for 25 years, supporting good causes in England and India.

The National Rail signal manager, who also has a daughter, was matched with dad-of-three Azim Khan, a West Ham fan.

And Wolves will be taking on the Hammers tonight. On the Zoom call, it’s as if the pair are like old friends joking. Manny teases: “Are you looking forward to the game with Wolves? Losing is not nice.”

Az works in IT but also runs a project called Pillars to Post, an online platform which looks at Muslims in sport and the lack of diversity. Manny said: “We need to look at why black people might not be getting the same chances as somebody who is white. This comes with open, honest conversations.”

Az said he saw a lot of racism in the 1980s and 90s. He added: “You felt maybe it went away or we defeated it, but it was pushed underground.”
