SPACE agency Nasa embarked on a mission to find its Photograph­er of the Year competitio­n – and the results were out of this world.

The extraordin­ary images show scientists and staff spearheadi­ng the agency’s work in its 10 centres across the US.

The contest was categories – places, people and portraits.

Chris Gunn won the first two with images of a lone person standing in front of a wall of air particle filters, and four scientists working on the optical element of the James Webb Space Telescope.

Tracy Caldwell Dyson was photograph­ed having a rest in her spacesuit before going under water at Nasa’s Johnson Space Center, in a portrait taken by Bill Ingalls.

Robert Markowitz captured astronaut Reid Wiseman as he is about to be lowered into a buoyancy lab where astronauts practice spacewalks.

Harlen Capen won first place in the people category for his photograph of wind tunnel technician­s.

The contest was launched in 2018 by the space agency’s Maura White, who assembled a panel of judges including Nasa’s oldest active astronaut, Don Pettit, 65. split into four documentat­ion,
