1949: American tennis player Gussie Moran caused a stir at Wimbledon when she appeared wearing lace-trimmed knickers designed by Teddy Tinling. The All England Club were so outraged that Tinling was banned from the event for 33 years. 1960: Floyd Patterson knocked out Ingemar Johansson, of Sweden, in the fifth round at the New York Polo
Grounds to become the first man to regain boxing’s world heavyweight title.
1987: New Zealand beat France 29-9 in Auckland to become the first winners of the Rugby World Cup.
2006: ruptured Michael knee Owen ligaments in England’s 2-2 draw with Sweden in their group match at the
World Cup in Germany. He was out of action for almost a year.
2008: Dutch club FC Twente named former England manager Steve McClaren as their coach. McClaren led Twente to the Eredivisie title in 2010.
2010: The France squad refused to train after Nicolas Anelka was sent home from the World Cup following a row with coach Raymond Domenech.
