You’re toast! ‘Insta-friendly’ plates see off brekkie icons

- By Cyril Dixon

THERE was a time when Britain went to work on an egg – or would start the day with toast or cornflakes.

But a poll showed we are shunning traditional breakfasts for exotic newcomers such as avocado toast, fried halloumi, cronuts and cruffins.

Old favourites like kippers, black pudding and porridge are disappearing from the table as younger generations go for a more “Instagrammable” start to the day.

The survey of 2,000 people aged 18 to 35 revealed half have never eaten black pudding and 57 per cent have never heard of that spicy 19th century favourite kedgeree.

Fifty-five per cent never eat kippers, 34 per cent do not touch fried bread and 29 per cent are strangers to boiled egg with soldiers. Cornflakes do not appear on 27 per cent of the younger generation’s breakfast tables and 24 per cent of those polled admitted they never eat porridge.

The research commissioned by Tabasco sauce found the group – from the Millennial and “Gen Z” age range

– preferred photogenic breakfasts snap and share on social media.

Interviewers found 71 per cent of young Brits would be happy to never eat cereal or toast for breakfast again.

About 18 per cent are more likely to be seen knocking up a plate of “cloud eggs”, which are “Instafriendly” clouds of white with a perfectly runny yolk.

They are also keen on “cronuts” – a doughnut and croissant hybrid – and to

2. Sweet or savoury pancakes

3. Avocado toast

4. Eggs benedict

5. Sweet or savoury waffles

6. Cinnamon roll

7. Cloud eggs

8. Banana bread

9. Breakfast burrito

10. Fried halloumi cruffins, which cross croissants with a muffin. A quarter of those surveyed eat avocado toast for breakfast all the time, while 16 per cent regard fried halloumi as a favourite.

Six per cent enjoy huevos rancheros, a Mexican dish with tortillas, eggs and salsa, as an early morning staple.

A Tabasco spokesman said: “We know millennials and Gen Z are seeking adventure in their everyday. Research indicates this is also the case

when it comes to their breakfast choices. Millennials and Gen Z in the UK today are much more likely to get creative first thing in the morning, favouring more modern dishes.

“They clearly see breakfast as the most important meal of the day and are very unlikely to feel satisfied with just the traditional choices favoured by previous generations.”
