DOCTOR’S ORDERS
THE Department of Health and Social Care recommends supplements for certain groups who are at risk of deficiency.
● Folic acid: If you’re pregnant, trying for a baby or could get pregnant, it’s recommended you take a 400 microgram supplement every day until you’re 12 weeks pregnant to help prevent neural tube defects such as spinal bifida.
● Vitamin D: Everyone (including pregnant and breastfeeding women) should consider taking a daily supplement containing 10 micrograms of vitamin D during autumn and winter.
However, those who are housebound and children aged one to four are advised to take one all year round. Check labels if you’re vegan as many supplements use a vitamin D3 obtained from animal sources, such as lanolin (sheep wool).
Healthspan Super Strength Vitamin D3 (£3.95 for 60 tablets; healthspan.co.uk) uses a plantbased form.
Multivitamins: Children aged six months to five years should take supplements containing vitamins A, C and D every day.
Your GP may also recommend supplements to treat conditions such as iron deficiency anaemia.
