53 years ago (1967)

We reported Rolling Stones Mick Jagger and Keith Richards would launch an appeal after Jagger was sentenced to three months and Richards to a year in jail on drugs charges.

Police had raided Richards’ West Sussex farmhouse and charged Jagger with possession of four amphetamin­e pills and Richards with allowing his house to be used for smoking cannabis. The sentences were later quashed.

35 years ago (1985)

The 39 American hostages from the hijacked TWA Flight 847 were freed in Beirut after being held for 17 days. The terrorists demanded the release of 700 Shi’ite Muslims being held in Israel.

US Navy diver Robert Stethem was killed but the remaining captives were freed when some hijackers’ demands were met.

13 years ago (2007)

A vehicle filled with propane canisters was driven into the entrance at Glasgow Airport in a failed terrorist attack. The driver was burnt and later died while five members of the public were injured in the attack. UK-born doctor Bilal Abdullah was arrested at the scene and sentenced to life.
