Welby should concentrate on empty pews not statues

IT’S reported that as a result of the Black Lives Matter movement the Archbishop of Canterbury will be looking “very carefully” at statues in Canterbury Cathedral (“Archbishop:We will look again at Church’s statues”, June 27).

Although the Most Rev Justin Welby doesn’t actually say what this ‘looking’ involves, one assumes that it will be to decide whether any of those who are commemorated have even a passing connection with their past misdeeds.

Perhaps His Eminence should spend more time looking “very carefully” at the reasons for the disastrous fall in attendances at his churches over the past 40 years.
