FINALLY, we are seeing some sense on the issue of international travel.

In my view, a total blanket ban with quarantine restrictions made no sense at all.

In European terms, the UK has been seeing some of the highest levels of infections, so why should someone from Germany have to quarantine when the pandemic is largely under control there?

It is entirely right to quarantine arrivals from places like Brazil, where they are still in the midst of the first wave of the pandemic, but the regulations desperately need to be tightened up.

It seems wrong that someone can land at Heathrow, take the train, tube and then another train to get to where they are going to quarantine.

How many people have they infected on that journey? Other countries have much tighter controls on this and we should do the same.

Focusing on high-risk countries but actually making the system effective seems like a sensible plan.

I suspect it came from a political position rather than a scientific one, but I’m pleased that sense has prevailed at last. Across Europe the virus has been tamed more successfully than many thought possible and we should feel safe spending some time abroad.

I have close family all across the world, with grandchildren living in Lima and Abu Dhabi, so I will be delighted to be able to visit them again when it is safe.

I’m sure there are millions of people who have been kept apart, even on different continents, during this pandemic, so getting families back together is such a fantastic boost.

Just a few months ago, a summer holiday seemed like a fading dream. We’re all going to have to be extra careful, but this is a welcome step forward.
