Kate’s agony as husband battles virus

KATE GARRAWAY was seen looking exhausted yesterday as her husband continues to battle against killer Covid-19.

The 53-year-old Good Morning Britain presenter is set to appear on the ITV show to update co-hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid on Derek Draper’s condition.

She revealed at the weekend that Derek has emerged from a coma but remains in intensive care.

Doctors have warned it could take him years to recover.Ahead of her interview, the star was seen heading out near her London home clutching her mobile after admitting she has been “living at the end of the phone” waiting for updates.

Earlier this week she said: “I have been living at the end of the phone 24/7, waiting for news of Derek.

“But the doctors have warned that his condition could persist for years so I have to get on with life while we are waiting for him to get better.” Talking about their son Billy, 10, she added: “Billy starts secondary school in September but Derek’s doctors say he won’t be out of hospital by then.

“My priority is to make the children feel safe, to not let them see me feeling vulnerable in a world where Derek was my rock.”

Kate and former political aide Derek, 52, married in 2005 and also have a 14-year-old daughter Darcey.

Of Derek’s progress against the coronaviru­s, Kate said: believe he can hear.

“When medical staff say, ‘Good morning, Derek’ he sometimes opens his eyes.

“We and the doctors are doing everything we can so that he can start to recover.

“We’re keeping positive and doing everything we can to bring him round.

“The children and I communicat­e with him every day on FaceTime while a nurse holds his iPad.”
