PICKS OF THE DAY

-

Sport: Test Cricket Highlights, BBC2, 7pm

It is Test cricket but not as we know it. There will be 22 players and two on-field umpires but the stands at the Ageas Bowl will contain no supporters. Isa Guha presents action from the opening day of the first Test in the three-match series, held in Southampton. This is England’s first match in the format since they toured South Africa in January and they will have been determined to shake off any rust and are likely to be playing under stand-in captain Ben Stokes (left).

A special series looking back at Bradley and Barney’s previous American adventures. After a pit stop at Niagara Falls, the Walshes (above) head to Lake Placid for a game of ice hockey, followed by a stay at the Trapp Family Lodge. Brad and Barney take on a frozen rock face, before dog sledding through a winter wonderland in Vermont. Then, the duo continue on their roadtrip to take rally cars for a spin on the ice.

Drama: Talking Heads, BBC1, 7.35pm

This is the 11th instalment of Talking Heads and you have to applaud all the writing and acting talent on show in this series that makes these monologues so engrossing. Maxine Peake (left) performs the Miss Fozzard Finds Her Feet – the tale of a woman whose chiropodist of many years drops the bombshell that he is moving to Scarborough. He suggests Mr Dunderdale, who’s retired but likes to keep his hand in. She is also looking after her brother, who is recovering from a stroke, and she’s been instructed to throw language at him to help his recovery. And so, on her return, she switches off the snooker and tells of Mr Dunderdale and her pre-fungal condition.

Reality: The Repair Show, BBC1, 8.15pm

This wonderful series really does deserve more attention as it is superb viewing. In tonight’s visit to the shop, Jay Blades (above left) and the team tackle a concertina that survived combat in the First World War, a vintage jigsaw, and a cocktail table with a surprising secret compartment. Plus, soft-toy restoration duo Julie Tatchell and Amanda Middleditch are called upon to rescue a toy dog.

Film: Octopussy, ITV4, 8pm

In what proved to be his penultimate outing as the word’s most famous secret agent, Roger Moore (right) investigates the death of a British agent in East Berlin, a mission that leads him to a glamorous, international jewel thief. He discovers one of her criminal cohorts, an Indian gangster, is in league with a crazed Soviet general who plans to heat up the Cold War by detonating a nuclear bomb in an American Air Force Base.
