THUGS who attack Britain’s emergency heroes could face years behind bars.

Ministers have vowed offenders “must feel the full force of the law”.

A four-week consultation starting today could see maximum sentences raised from 12 months for those convicted of attacking a police officer, firefighter or paramedic.

Emergency workers are now being 999 two asked to give their views on whether the maximum sentence should be doubled.

Justice Secretary Robert Buckland said: “We will continue to do everything in our power to protect our police, firefighters and paramedics, and ensure those who seek to harm them feel the full force of the law.

“We’re determined to look at how our laws can protect them further.”
