Ghislaine moved from cell to cell to foil jail attacks

- By John Twomey

GHISLAINE Maxwell is being “moved from cell to cell” in a New York jail amid fears she will be killed behind bars.

Special security measures are said to have been put in place before her court appearance tomorrow when she will be charged with procuring girls as young as 14 for the late billionaire Jeffrey Epstein.

British socialite Maxwell, 58, who strenuously denies any wrongdoing, is sometimes held on her own or put in a cell with another prisoner.

But the authorities at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn are keeping her on the move for her safety, according to reports.

Her lawyers claim there have been “multiple and credible threats” against her life. And a source said: “Jeffrey Epstein died in prison and the authorities are terrified someone will try to kill Ghislaine.”

She was arrested in a “mob-handed” raid by 60 FBI agents and police at her isolated mansion in Bradford, New Hampshire, on July 2.

Officers are said to have used a battering ram to gain entry even though the front door was open.

The daughter of the late newspaper publisher Robert Maxwell was handcuffed and taken to a nearby county jail before being transferred to the detention centre in New York City.

It is understood she spent the first days in paper clothes as, like

Maxwell with Epstein in 2000, at a conference in 2013, right, and the mansion where she was arrested

all new prisoners, she was considered a suicide risk. The source said: “She is now wearing a prison regulation khaki shirt and trousers.

“She was in deep shock at first, but she is getting better each day. She is not a whiner or complainer.

“She is also someone who isn’t posh or prissy. She is being moved from cell to cell and sometimes has a cellmate, sometimes not.

“They are terrified someone will try to kill her so they keep moving her around.” It also is believed the jail has been hit by an outbreak of coronavirus. Maxwell insists she is no “Cruella de Vil” – the villain in Disney’s One Hundred And One Dalmatians – and says she had not met Epstein for 15 years.

Epstein, 66, hanged himself in jail last year while facing trial for trafficking girls for sex in America.

In 2008, he was jailed for 18 months in Florida after he admitted procuring a girl under 18 for prostitution. Maxwell, who now has longer hair after not having had a trim for a year, is subject to a strict jail regime.

The day starts at 6am and beds must be made by 7.30am. Inmates are allowed a pair of trainers and one radio or MP3 player. Phone calls are limited to 15 minutes, with a maximum of 300 minutes per month.

Prisoners can be searched at any time if they are suspected of hiding contraband. They are also banned from having any “nude or sexually suggestive” photos.
