Care home has a rocking time in the lockdown
IT’S never too late to be a rock star as these care home residents, all in their 80s and 90s, are proving.
With the help of staff, they have passed their time – and had lots of fun – in lockdown by recreating classic album covers.
They became the faces of some of music’s most iconic albums, copying, among others, Elvis Presley, David Bowie and Madonna.
Activities coordinator Robert Speker, at Sydmar Lodge in Edgware, north London, came up with the idea to send the pictures to families, who were unable to visit residents.
Julie Davey, service manager, said: “The whole idea really was just to put a little bit of fun into the residents’ days and also to offer some reassurance to families that their loved ones are enjoying themselves and they’re safe and cared for.
“They love doing something different than sitting around and playing bingo.” On one album cover resident Sheila Solomons, 93, strums away on a walking stick mimicking Elvis Presley on his debut album.
In another, a resident puts on personal protective equipment to replace the nurse from Blink 182’s Enema Of The State album.
Not to be outdone, resident Roma Cohen channels her inner David Bowie from his album Aladdin Sane. And Toba David takes on Michael Jackson.
The carers join in by recreating the iconic cover from Queen’s album Queen II.
A spokeswoman for the home said grandchildren in particular liked the pictures as they had “never have seen their grandparents in that way before”.
