Our frontline report from the Korean War revealed three “heavily armed” North Korean divisions had launched an assault on “battle-weary” US forces dug in along General MacArthur’s “line of no retreat”.
Half of South Korea had fallen to the communists in a fortnight and military experts warned of the “extreme gravity” of the situation.
60 years ago (1960)
John F Kennedy, 43, was nominated as the presidential candidate for the Democratic Party.
His critics, including fellow Democrat and ex-President Harry Truman, claimed he was too young and inexperienced to be president but his youth and charisma convinced many supporters.
35 years ago (1985)
Live Aid concerts at London’s Wembley Stadium and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, USA raised £30million for famine relief in Ethiopia and Sudan.
Queen, David Bowie and The Beach Boys were among the stars who performed at the concerts which were organised by rocker-turned-humanitarian Bob Geldof and which attracted a worldwide audience of around 1.5 billion.
