1918: Italian racing driver Alberto Ascari was born. The first to win successive Formula One world titles, he lost his life testing a new Ferrari in 1955.
1930: The first World Cup football match saw France meet Mexico in Montevideo. A crowd of about 1,000 saw France win 4-1.
1995: Former Arsenal boss George Graham was banned for a year after being found guilty of misconduct charges relating to transfer ‘bungs’.
