Game, set and smooch for TV show lovers
KISSING and sex scenes in TV shows are about to resume – as long as strict new guidelines are observed.
Actors and crew working in close proximity will be screened more frequently for Covid-19 and have daily symptom checks.
They must also observe social distancing in their life outside work during the filming period.
The rules have been drawn up for interactions in scripts that require closer contact than 2m (6ft). While they do not specifically mention intimate scenes, the BBC said that for shows to reflect real-life interactions, “we are going to need to film scenes and shows where people are closer than two metres”.
The broadcaster has helped to develop the guidelines along with ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, Sky and others. The guidance says all other options must have been considered first. As well as drama shows, the rules could potentially be followed by programmes such as Strictly Come Dancing, which is returning in the autumn.
The BBC said: “Getting TV production back up and running safely is our priority.
“But, if we are to get back to producing the range and quality of programmes that the public love, which reflect real-life interactions, we are going to need to film scenes and shows where people are closer than 2m apart.”
ITV said: “Production teams continue to work hard to bring back many more loved shows. This advice reflects the evolving situation we all find ourselves in.
“Above all, it is there to ensure the safety and well-being of all those who work on the programmes.”
Before the rules were published, Ita O’Brien, the “intimacy coordinator” for Normal People, told BBC Radio 4 that sex scenes could be told through “sculpting the gaze and perhaps a movement towards each other”. The new guidelines do not apply in Wales.
