Brave Kate fights back tears as virus survivor gives hope for husband Derek

- By Mark Jefferies

KATE Garraway had to fight back her emotions on her first day back on Good Morning Britain as she spoke to coronavirus survivor Michael Rosen.

The presenter’s eyes filled with tears as the children’s book author described his recovery after 47 days in a coma.

Like Kate’s husband Derek, he was close to dying on several occasions before bouncing back and is now in the final stages of his recovery, including learning to walk again.

Rosen , 74, told her: “I’m feeling good. Covid has a very long tail depending on how severe the infection was and if you were in intensive care, which I was.

“But there are people all over the country, you know better than me Kate, that it isn’t an illness that you have and leave behind. I am feeling good, but I hope Kate, it gives you some hope, too.”

Kate, 53, revealed last week that Derek, 52, is showing positive signs of recovery but was still in hospital three months after contracting coronavirus.

And she replied to Rosen: “It’s fantastic to see people come through this.

“It’s so lovely to hear you. It’s stories like yours that give everybody hope, so thank you very much indeed.” Kate’s ITV co-host Ben Shephard agreed and added: “It’s hugely important. Kate, as you’ve said to me in the past about recovery, where there’s life there’s hope.

“That has been a long journey for Michael and it’s continuing.

“I thought that was a lovely description, ‘Covid has a very long tail’.”

Kate, who was back on GMB yesterday after a four-month break due to Derek’s illness, struggled to carry on and turned to fellow presenter Lorraine Kelly, who had returned yesterday with her own show.

Kate’s day did not get off to a great start.

Her “car didn’t turn up” to take her to the studios, her computer went “into a two-hour update” as she arrived at the building, and attempts to dye her hair made her locks “almost fluorescent”.

She added: “It is a little blonder than we might be expecting.”

But Ben, 45, welcomed her to the hot-seat by saying: “I’ve got a big smile on my face.”

And fans reacted with a string of positive comments on social media after watching her again fronting the show.
