TOOTHLESS TIGERS ROUTED BY WIGAN

Hapless Hull on the brink after being hit for EIGHT

- By Ian Whittell

HULL slumped to the jointheaviest defeat in their 116-year history against a rampant Wigan.

Grant McCann’s side look in the mood to drop into League One – even if Wigan suffer a threatened 12-point deduction after going into administration.

Wigan scored seven goals in a nightmare first-half for Paul Cook’s men with Kieran Dowell clinching his hat-trick after the break to add to Hull’s woes.

That completed Hull’s biggest reverse since they lost 8-0 at Wolves in 1911. McCann has faced calls to quit for the remaining two games after Hull gave up the ghost and slumped a step closer the drop.

But the shell-shocked Hull boss said: “We have two huge games coming up over the next week or so. So I’ll prepare the team to try and get results.

“We looked like we were going to concede every time they attacked. We could have been 10-0 down at half-time.”

The result set a new record league win for the Latics. Kal Naismith opened the scoring inside the first minute when he headed in Dowell’s cross.

Hull did then manage to hold out until the 27th minute when Kieffer Moore turned in Nathan Byrne’s pull-back.

Dowell scored his first of the night after neat work from Sam Morsy and Jamal Lowe.

Lowe made it 4-0 after 37 minutes with a smart finish from another Byrne assist and the full-back set up Moore’s header for number five.

With Hull having thrown in the towel, Dowell was given

space to score from 15 yards. And midfielder Joe Williams’ thundering shot from the edge of the area after a pass from Lowe just before the break made it 7-0.

Antonee Robinson hit the Hull bar from distance after the restart before Dowell struck a great volley in the 65th minute.

Cook said: “There has not been one complaint from the players, nobody asking when they’re getting paid.”
