Klopp: Dark day could signal a world superleague

- By Andy Dunn FEARFUL: Reds boss Klopp

JURGEN KLOPP believes that the decision to overturn City’s European ban was a dark moment for the game.

And the Liverpool manager is worried a global super league could be formed if the Financial Fair Play system is rendered useless by the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s verdict.

Klopp said: “I’m happy that City can play in the Champions League because if I think about the [Premier] League and City has 10-12 games less and can rest players, then I don’t see any chance for any other teams in the [Premier] League. I absolutely don’t wish anybody anything bad, but I don’t think it was a good day for football yesterday, to be honest.”

Klopp is clearly worried the CAS ruling will give the green light for wealthy club owners to go on lavish spending sprees in the belief FFP is a busted flush.

He said: “I really hope FFP stays because it gives borders where you can go to, but not over. That’s good for football. If you start saying nobody has to care any more, then the richest people or countries can do whatever they want in football.

“I think that would lead automatically to kind of a world super league with 10 clubs. I don’t know the clubs but it wouldn’t depend on the names of the clubs, but on the people who own the clubs.

“Then, it is not about revenues any more, it is about if someone is ready to spend a billion of his own money.

“That is why I am happy that it is completely different. If you qualify for the Champions League you have more money.

If we wanted to buy a player we had to sell before.”

Klopp feels any loosening of FFP will make it much harder to repeat their Premier League title triumph.

He said: “I am really happy we won the championship this year, to be honest, because it will not be easier in the future.”
