King of the Hungaroring

- By Matt Maltby

LEWIS HAMILTON revelled in hauling himself off the canvas to land another significant blow in his bid to create F1 history.

After completing a Hungaroring hat-trick, the Mercedes driver is just five wins short of Michael Schumacher’s all-time record of 91 race triumphs as he bids to match the German’s seven world titles.

The six-time champion leads team-mate Valtteri Bottas by five points in the title race after his latest success in Mogyorod and was evidently delighted to bounce back from his lacklustre start to the campaign.

He said: “It was one of my favourite races.

“While I was on my own, it was a different kind of challenge. We had great pace, great pit-stops and great strategy.

“It was perfect to get out on the fresh tyres in the closing laps and get the [fastest lap] bonus point. In round one I was hit by multiple different punches I was not ready for, but I refocused and the last two races have been fantastic.

“I have been on point this weekend so I need to keep it up.”

Second-placed Max Verstappen said: “It wasn’t what I wanted but the mechanics did an incredible job in the end.”
