Bangers and mash...our home comfort food

- By Elly Blake By Steph Spyro

A COMET from outer space looks set to crash into Windsor Castle in this spectacular picture.

But don’t be alarmed. It may look like a shot from a disaster movie, but Comet Neowise is actually some 64 million miles away from the Queen.

It was travelling at about 40 miles per second as it raced past the Earth’s atmosphere.

The moment it aligned with the castle was captured by amateur photographer

Deepal Ratnayaka, 43, who saw the phenomenon at just after 1am. Comet Neowise is the brightest visible from the northern hemisphere in 25 years, and measures around three miles in diameter.

It was first discovered by Nasa’s Neowise (Near Earth Object Widefield Infrared Survey Explorer) telescope on March 27.

FAMILIES have turned to nostalgic dishes and classic pub grub at home during lockdown – with sausage and mash topping the list.

They reignited their love of cooking, with a third of the nation now finding more enjoyment in the kitchen than before the pandemic, according to a survey.

The most popular dish to cook from scratch after bangers and mash was chicken curry, followed by cottage pie, frozen gases, rock and dust that orbit the Sun” left over from the formation of the solar system, according to Nasa scientists.

Their size can range from a few miles wide to tens of miles.

But as they orbit closer to the sun, they heat up and spew gases and dust into a glowing head that can be larger than a planet.

And as these substances stream off the comet, they form a spectacular gas beef lasagne, and fish and chips with peas.

Matt Hood, commercial director at Co-op supermarkets, which ran the survey, said: “With an increase in at-home dining occasions customers turned to traditional recipes and pub classics to keep them comforted.”

The report said 76 per cent of the nation has made a traditional-style dish during lockdown, and dust cloud that trails behind them for millions of miles – and occasionally can be seen from Earth with the naked eye.

Nasa’s Emily Kramer said: “It’s quite rare for a comet to be bright enough that we can see it with the naked eye or even just with binoculars.

“The last time we had a comet this bright was Hale-Bopp back in 1995-96.”

She added that there are “about 13 million Olympic swimming pools of water” in the comet. and cooks have added, on average, two recipes to their repertoire.

The homemade dishes meant people snapped up six times as much fresh meat than before lockdown with pork sales rising eightfold, followed by beef.

Shoppers’ habits also changed as customers bought food to last an average of 10 days, compared to three days before.

When it came to dessert, families turned to nostalgic, quickfix packets, with demand rising for packet powder.

Nutritional therapist Dr Christy Fergusson said: “When people haven’t been able to spend time with family and friends, it’s no surprise they have been trying to recreate those feelings of comfort, relaxation and joy through their meals.”

Nostalgic desserts, such as packet trifle and custard, may remind them of fond childhood times, she added. trifle and custard
