Motorways are driving everyone to distraction
THE M20 has been rated the worst major road in England – for the second year running.
A poll by watchdog Transport Focus found just 63 per cent of drivers were satisfied with their last journey on the motorway linking London and Dover.
It has had reduced speed limits for much of the past two years while it was converted to a smart motorway.
Then the installation and removal of barriers as part of no-deal Brexit planning caused extra major disruption.
One respondent to the survey, which queried more than 8,000 drivers, said: “Get roadworks done. It’s been 50mph for too long.”
Satisfaction with the management of roadworks across all motorways and major A roads, which is the responsibility of Highways England, was just 68 per cent, the poll found.
Satisfied
The M23, which connects Gatwick Airport with the capital, was given the second lowest satisfaction rating at 64 per cent.
Drivers rated the M11 as England’s best motorway. It runs between London and Cambridge.
Some 92 per cent were satisfied with their last journey on the road, with high scores for journey times and safety.
The average rating across all major roads was 81 per cent.
The best A road was the A66 route between Scotch Corner and Penrith via the Pennines, with a satisfaction score of 90 per cent.
Anthony Smith, chief executive of Transport Focus, said journey time was key: “As drivers return to the roads it is vital that management of roadworks is looked at.”
