PICKS OF THE DAY

-

Drama: Mrs America, BBC2, 9pm & 9.45pm

In the two episodes broadcast tonight we traverse 1973 to 1975. With 33 of the necessary 38 states ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment, Phyllis Schlafly’s campaign has polarised opinion in the critical state of Illinois. The proponents offer her a challenge to publicly debate the issues, but are surprised by a counter-offer for a “couple’s debate” on national television. Two years later, Jill Ruckelshaus is appointed chairwoman of a National Commission to honour women and urge ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment, but she has to contend with Schlafly. Cate Blanchett (left) continues to shine in the central role.

Film: The Iron Lady, Film4, 6.50pm

On a night dominated by strong women, this Oscar-winning biopic is a great watch. The elderly Margaret Thatcher, now living in seclusion, tries to come to terms with the death of her husband Denis, bringing back memories of her controversial political career. She reflects on her rise to power in the male-dominated Conservative Party and the tumultuous events during her time in office. Jim Broadbent and Olivia Colman join leading lady Meryl Streep (left).

Soap: Coronation Street, ITV, 7.30pm

Nicky tells Daniel that they could do a lot more than talk for the money he’s paying her. But he explains it’s not about sex, just the pair (Kimberly Hart-Simpson and Rob Mallard, both above) spending time together is making him feel better. Adam approaches Gary and accuses him of killing Rick. While this is met with a refusal, Gary is rattled. In prison, Lucie gives Yasmeen a book on coercive control.

Current Affairs: The One Show, BBC1, 7pm

A mainstay of British early evening television, the long-running One Show, continues to prosper and find new ways to reinvent itself and ensure it remains relevant to its millions of viewers. Part of that is down to the warmth and charisma of host Alex Jones (right). Tonight’s co-host is Rylan ClarkNeal, a man who himself has ensured he remains in the nation’s mind by adapting to the passage of time smartly. Tonight, the pair are joined by famous faces for that familiar form of chat.

Science: The Human Body: Secrets Of Your Life Revealed, BBC4, 8pm

Several years have passed since this was first broadcast so we are grateful for the recap. Chris and Xand van Tulleken (both above) explore the secrets of the body, beginning with the changes it goes through. They examine why human childhood is longer than any other creature on earth and uncover the mysterious trigger that brings about adulthood.
