PICKS OF THE DAY

-

Documentary: The Talk, C4, 10pm

Channel 4 is always keen to tackle big societal issues at their peak and this is an interesting angle on the racism debate, featuring some of the biggest names in modern popular culture. Famous parents of black and mixed race children share their personal stories of becoming aware of prejudice, and being given similar lessons by their own parents. Tinie Tempah, Emeli Sande, Leigh-Anne Pinnock (middle left with her parents), Lennie James, Maro Itoje and Ade Adepitan are among the high-profile contributors discussing being on both sides of this commonplace exchange, and how they dealt with subjects like being seen as different or dealing with the police.

Film: Roman J. Israel, Esq, Film4, 9pm

This film stars Denzel Washington, so you know it will be top class, but this really is superb. Roman J. Israel, played by Washington (left) does not really fit in anywhere and keeps himself to himself while he works in a small law firm in Los Angeles. But that would not make much of a story on its own. When circumstances radically change, Israel has to find his voice and also some strength to stand tall. Crime drama, co-starring Colin Farrell and Carmen Ejogo.

Thriller: The Deceived, Channel 5, 9pm

Paul Mescal came to the attention of the wider world in Normal People and he continues to see his reputation grow here. Michael instructs Mary to keep an eye on Ophelia, but she slips away to meet up with Sean – who guesses that Michael is the father of her baby, but promises to keep her secret. An encounter with a local psychic leads to a surprising announcement. Louisa Harland (above) co-stars.

Drama: Holby City, BBC1, 8pm

It is a pivotal day in more ways than one for Ric. His operation happens to coincide with Guy’s disciplinary hearing, forcing him to choose between treatment that could save his life and his need to see Guy (John Michie, above) face the consequences of his actions. Sacha’s silent treatment leaves Essie convinced he knows something about Frankie’s disappearance and Chloe delves into the world of internet dating.

Entertainment: How’s Your Head, Hun? BBC1, 10.45pm

This show might not be everybody’s cup of tea but it certainly has a strong following among the general public. Alan Cumming and Nick Grimshaw are among the special guests joining the unmistakable Michelle Visage (right) for a special Pride episode this evening. Chef Jaime Laurita drops in to bake a rather special Pride cake, which looks amazing and Michelle herself performs a long-distance marriage ceremony for a couple in Scotland.
