‘Perfect’ proposal goes up in smoke

- By Joe Pagnelli

THESE pictures show how a hapless fiance spelled out “Marry Me?”’ in candles for his girlfriend – and burned down their flat.

Albert Ndreu, 26, spent two weeks meticulously planning his perfect proposal after buying a ring for Valerija Madevic.

He had decided to surprise his sweetheart by filling their living room with more than 100 candles and balloons.

Some of the lights he used to spell out “Marry Me?” on the floor. Albert went out to bring her home for the surprise – but after he left it caught fire.

Three fire crews rushed there after Valerija saw smoke pouring from the flat’s door.

But despite the massive damage Albert was undeterred and got down on one knee and asked the love of his life if she would marry him.

Valerija, 22, said: “He pulled out a box from his pocket and I was just speechless.

“He said that he messed up – our house was literally in flames – but asked me if I would marry him. And I said yes.

Romantic

“It’s such a beautiful day, the most beautiful day in my life.” Albert, a waiter, had spent over four hours preparing his romantic setting.

He said: “I wanted to say something like she was the light of my heart, but maybe that was too much light.”

Albert and Valerija have been together for just over a year after meeting on a dating website. The pair, who believe strongly in destiny, logged into the app for the first time on the same day.

After a short chat they exchanged phone numbers, set up a date and he deleted the app. Thankfully only a laptop, a speaker, and some books were lost in the fire but they are not sure when it will be safe to return to their flat in Sheffield.

She said: “You can replace things in the house, but not our love for each other.

“In the end we’re in good health and together and that’s all that matters.”
