I COMPLETELY understand the impossible situation the Government is in.

Whatever they do people will criticise them, and I have tried to be as fair as possible in my analysis of what is going on.

But the rules surrounding quarantine just make absolutely no sense.

Even forgetting the flawed way in which countries are being put on and taken off the exemption list – that’s a different column – the way the quarantine is being imposed is ludicrous.

Who is coming up with these rules? Clearly not much thought has gone into them.

I sat down and read the full government document and there are so many glaring inconsistencies, not to mention the level of enforcement seems non-existent. It all seems to be based on trust.

I’ve heard from many people that there are no checks at airports or ports for the locator form, and even if people do fill it out there is nothing to stop them from giving false information.

So if the Government is relying on people to follow the rules, why are they so draconian?

Even in the heat of the pandemic, we were allowed out for exercise once a day.

But the hundreds of thousands of people quarantining cannot leave their house. It’s outrageous.

Clearly going to a pub or to the shop is a different story, but a socially distanced walk with the dog should be allowed.

If the rules were fairer, people would be more willing to follow them.

I sincerely hope that the Government at least allows these people out for a walk once a day.

This isn’t just people coming back from holiday – people have been visiting sick relatives or moving back to the UK.

Will sense prevail to slightly soften the rules?

I doubt it, but wouldn’t it be refreshing to see?
