Theatre staff who have become lockdown stars

- By Paul Jeeves

INCREDIBLE stories of theatre staff who have become key workers during the pandemic have been captured by a top arts photographer.

Ali Wright saw her earnings dry up in March as all her booked work was cancelled with the closure of all live performances.

Having spent two years building up a successful client base, the former actor saw everything fall apart as expected work amongst London’s creative sector and a jampacked opera season vanished.

But as the theatre industry was plunged into crisis Ali began hearing more and more stories about freelance workers being forced to turn their hands to inspiring jobs

That prompted her to devise My Latest Role – an online gallery of actors, stage managers, production assistants, make-up artists who have turned their hand to new jobs that have helped keep the country running through the pandemic.

Ali, 27, said: “Around 70 per cent of the industry is made up of freelance workers and I wanted to reveal more about these people.”

It was while talking to a friend that Ali became aware of that multitalented people – 50 per cent of whom have been ineligible for government support – were turning their hands to key roles and have helped Britain battle the pandemic.

It is another example of the vital
