Angry local students march on Williamson

- By Mark Reynolds

FURIOUS pupils marched in protest yesterday from their school gates to the South Staffordshire office of local MP and Education Secretary Gavin-Williamson.

Dozens of students from Codsall Community High School loudly chanted “trust our teachers” and “you’re having a laugh, Gav”.

One held a sign with Mr Williamson pictured as a clown.

One organiser, Jess, 18, who was predicted to achieve A-level grades BCC but was given BDD, said the protest was important “because every student in this country should get equal fair grades. We shouldn’t be reduced to an algorithm or a postcode”.

Another pupil, Monica, 18, said her predicted results had been “severely downgraded” from CCC to CDE.

She said: “To be downgraded by two grades is quite significant considering I didn’t actually get a chance to sit the exams. So I can only blame the Government.”

Head teacher Alun Harding told of the “significant level of disappointment and frustration they feel”.

He added: “The system has been so poorly thought through.

“The impact is going to be enormous and they want to vent their frustration.”

Cars sounded their horns in support and residents stood outside their homes to applaud.

Almost all marchers had signs – one displaying the message: “Boris! Have the courage to admit you got it wrong.”

Tory MP Sir Bob Neill tweeted: “Each of those affected is a young person with their own ambitions and hopes. Our response should adequately reflect the urgency the situation deserves.”
