I HONESTLY don’t think we have properly understood as a country the damage this mess has done to our children.

Educational and social development has been seriously stunted and I’m not sure how we can reverse the damage.

One thing is for certain. The schools have to open in September.

I would like to put on record my thanks to all of those teachers who have worked so hard throughout this crisis.

They have endured so much criticism, but ultimately it is the Government who has the responsibility to get schools moving.

I’ve received dozens of messages from teachers who are working diligently to make their schools as safe as possible.

It’s great to see and I wish them all the best for September. For me, the blame game is a pointless exercise. All parties involved – Government, teachers, unions – need to get round a table and get it sorted.

Sniping at each other achieves nothing for the children and politics needs to be kept well out of this debate.

Of course there is an element of risk, there is crossing the road, but I shudder at the idea some have pushed forward that schools need to remain shut.

Children need to be around each other and they need to learn. How could we live with ourselves if we didn’t at least try?

Of course, close monitoring is required and it will not always go smoothly, but the alternative is totally unacceptable.

Are we going to be a country petrified by fear, unable to take any steps forward? So many have forgotten the collateral damage being done by the current restrictions.

In my view, our children’s futures have to come first, otherwise we will have left a generation behind.
