I TRUST MYSELF TO STAY UNITED No1

- From David McDonnell in Cologne

DAVID DE GEA has warned Dean Henderson he has no intention of relinquishing his No1 goalkeeping status at Manchester United.

Henderson has returned after a successful season on loan at Sheffield United to challenge the Spaniard.

But De Gea, left, whose first-choice spot has been questioned after some high-profile errors, is confident he can keep 23-year-old Henderson at bay.

De Gea insists he has never doubted himself. “No, I trust in myself,” said the 29-year-old. “I showed my qualities

all the years, so I just keep available for the manager.

“I’m always ready to play to try to help the team as always, as I did always.”

With United No2 Sergio Romero set to leave this summer, boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants Henderson to fight De Gea to be No1. De Gea was preferred to Romero for United’s 2-1 Europa League semi-final defeat by Sevilla and said he will always be ready to play and battle to keep his place.

“It’s the same as with every match, the manager has in his mind the team,” said De Gea. “I always want to play. I knew it was a possibility that I was going to play. I’ve trained the best I can in order to help the team.”

De Gea believes United need to add more experience to their squad if they are to challenge for trophies.

Borussia Dortmund forward Jadon Sancho remains United’s No1 target, with the Red Devils hopeful of securing a deal for the 20-year-old.

But De Gea thinks they also need to bring in more mature players if United are to go to the next level.

He said: “Maybe we need a bit more experience in the team, but we have to score the chances.

“Let’s keep improving, let’s keep fighting for this club and let’s try to win trophies next season. We’re playing good, attacking football.”
