We will miss English crowd banter

- By Gideon Brooks

AUSTRALIA skipper Aaron Finch says he will miss the banter from English crowds this summer but insisted his T20 side could have silenced them anyway. Australia touched down in England this week ahead of two white ball series – T20 and 50-overs – against Eoin Morgan’s men next month. He said downing the World Cup winners would be tough, but he was confident they have the firepower to shock them in the short form. Finch said: “England have played some great one-day cricket and since 2015 have been the standout team, been ultra aggressive.

“We haven’t been as consistent and haven’t been where we need to be, so this is just another step to getting where we want to be, working back from the 2023, 50-overs World Cup.

“But having got to No1 in the world in T20 cricket we want to stay there.”

Finch singled out wicketkeeper batsman Josh Phillipe, left-arm seamer Daniel Sams and the latest express pace man in Riley Meredith as a new three to watch. The opener said:

“They are super talented players and can be really damaging. Josh can play it all around the ground, Daniel has all the tricks and Ryan has raw pace.”

And while he said they would not be getting the full experience with no crowds, he was confident there will be no drop in intensity from his side.

“It is always good to have a crowd to entertain and the banter that comes from English crowds is pretty special,” said Finch. “Do they go over the top sometimes? Yes probably. But it’s all a great thing to be a part of.”

England face Finch’s T20 side at the Ageas Bowl on September 4, 6 and 8 before three ODIs at Old Trafford on September 11, 13 and 16.
