WE ALL know how difficult the Government has made foreign travel, in my view quite unnecessarily. But we are where we are and many people just don’t want to take the risk this year.

The idea of quarantining for 14 days and not even being allowed to take the dog for a walk is not a good prospect.

We live in a fantastic country with so much to do. It’s been great to see so many people discovering that as they replace trips to the Canary Islands with a weekend down to Devon.

It doesn’t sound as glamorous, but there’s no reason you can’t have just as much fun. I’m going to walk round the Llyn Peninsula in North Wales next month – really looking forward to it.

All across the country there are local businesses and attractions that need our support. So why not try to go and do something you’ve never done before this weekend? Maybe visit a local wildlife park or take a river cruise. Anything, just try something new.

As some of you may know, I’m a bit of a train fanatic. It’s a real passion of mine and I’m so keen to support any railway attractions.

My local steam railway, the Chinnor Railway, is just getting back open for visitors for three days and I’m delighted to be helping out. On Monday my wife Alison and I will be serving tea and coffee all day, so if you’re in the area please come along. Tickets need to be purchased online first.

I know many people are upset that their exotic foreign holidays may have to wait for a little while yet, but we let’s not take for granted what is on our doorstep.

This weekend, let’s all try to get out and enjoy something new. It supports local businesses and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.
