Monster Avozillas are set to be huge with shoppers

- By Steph Spyro

GIANT avocados dubbed “Avozillas” which are almost as heavy as two bags of sugar are hitting supermarket shelves from today.

The supersized fruit is 10 times bigger than the average avocado and comes from just a few trees grown more than 5,000 miles away.

A bumper crop of the South Africanproduced Avozillas are on offer this year thanks to a great harvest and perfect growing conditions in the hot climate abroad.

More of the monster fruit is also available because trees bearing Avozillas only grow every other year as they are so heavy. Shoppers can grab a rare one for £4 when they go on sale at 300 Tesco stores across the country.

This year, they weigh a hefty 3lb – a third heavier than previous yields and bigger than before.

Avozillas this year have an average length of nine inches and circumference of up to five inches. Previous ones were about seven inches long, with a circumference of up to four inches.

A major high street stir was caused when the Avozillas went on sale for the first time in 2013 because they were five times bigger than a regular avocado. But suppliers of the giant fruit have said this year’s crop is 10 times bigger.

Tesco chilled salad and avocado buyer Jordan Blandford said: “These amazing whoppers are guaranteed to stop anyone in their tracks. The fruit is extremely rare and comes from just a relatively small number of trees grown by one of the world’s biggest suppliers of avocados, in South Africa.

“The Avozillas tend to grow in number every other year because the plant is depleted after bearing such large fruit. One of these monsters makes a huge bowl of guacamole.”
