Leo Tolstoy (Vintage Classics, £10.99) A classic which has the depth of truth and real emotion in it. Outstanding.

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD

Harper Lee (Arrow, £7.99) Heart-breaking.A lawyer defends a black man wrongly accused of raping a white woman in America’s Deep South. Harper Lee shines a light on prejudice and class with such wit.

My love of bears started with this book. I loved all of AA Milne’s children’s stories.They’re pure escapism.

CARELESS LOVE

Peter Robinson (Hodder, £7.99) He’s a great writer and master of the police procedural. He knows how to keep us guessing and keep the pages turning.
