Maguire left his boss in a quandary
THE England manager has come in for unfair criticism over his handling of Harry Maguire in the aftermath of his Greek conviction (“Maguire recall on the cards”, August 27).
When the trial was ongoing the Manchester United captain was included in the latest national squad. Gareth Southgate used the protocol of being innocent until proved guilty, but consequently a conviction moved the goalposts and dropping Maguire was standard procedure.
Maguire’s legal team securing a retrial then put Southgate in an invidious position.
It is unreasonable for the finger of judgment to be pointed at him. Being the England manager can be a thankless job.
