ARE TRADITIONAL FIRST NAMES STILL THE BEST?

-

Yes

YOUR article about children’s names shows that you should always choose a traditional one for your child (“Parents drop classic names when making baby choice”, August 27).

Yes, some of the old favourites like Margaret and Thomas are falling out of favour but, as your story says, these names always come back into fashion eventually.

Choosing a name to follow popular culture never looks good in the long term, as any Kylie or Keanu will, no-doubt, tell you.

No

HOW boring that Oliver and Olivia top the list of most popular names again.

I get that people like to stick with what is popular but it shows a huge lack of imagination.

It is no coincidence that people who become celebrities tend to go for unusual names or even invent their own.

It is that desire to be different and stand out from the crowd that helps make them celebrities in the first place.

So let’s have a few more Harpers and Duas, it’s far more interesting.
