Walters is walking on water at Belfry
JUSTIN WALTERS ripped up The Belfry on day one of the UK Championship before flooding forced play to be abandoned with more than half the field still on the course.
South Africa’s Walters had six birdies and an eagle for an eight-underpar 64, three shots clear of the field.
Play was halted for the day shortly after 2pm, with parts of the course under water.
Walters said: “When you shoot 64 you’re smiling aren’t you? I wasn’t smiling with a couple of holes to go though because I started to get really wet.”
Walters had missed four cuts in five events on the European Tour’s UK Swing since golf returned from the coronavirus shutdown. England’s Ross Fisher and David Dixon, Rhys Enoch of Wales and Scotland’s Calum Hill were the leading Brits overnight, all shooting 68.
