Northants game abandoned after positive Covid- 19 test
NORTHAMPTONSHIRE saw their Bob Willis Trophy match against Gloucestershire abandoned when one of their players tested positive for Covid- 19.
The player was not involved in the match.
However, two of his housemates, who had been in contact with him since he started showing symptoms, had been. He also travelled to Bristol as part of the squad.
It is the first time a sporting fixture has been abandoned after it had begun due to coronavirus. All players are set to be tested again as part of the track and trace system in place. The player was tested for coronavirus on Saturday with the results returned yesterday after the
ROUND- UP
game had already started.
He is self- isolating at home and officials at Northamptonshire have recognised that better communication may have seen the game either postponed or players withdrawn to minimise the risk of infection.
Middlesex batsman Nick Gubbins was withdrawn from a game earlier in the season against
Kent as a precautionary measure after coming into contact with someone displaying symptoms. Gloucestershire may have been pleased with the abandonment after struggling to 66- 6 at lunch, but neither side appeared after the interval. Meanwhile, Ian Bell hit a half- century a day after saying he would retire at the end of the season. His 50, in his penultimate first- class innings, was muchneeded as his Warwickshire side could make only 186 against Glamorgan.
