PILE- UP POINTS Solution to fixture casualties

- By Julie Stott

SUPER LEAGUE opponents could be awarded a point apiece if their game falls foul of a Covid- 19 fixture pile- up.

Six clubs have already had players return positive tests, with several games rearranged or postponed.

Clubs have vowed to do everything possible to finish the season, even to the point of playing two games a week.

But the positive tests and self- isolation forced on other players could soon wreak such havoc that it will be impossible to rearrange every fixture. In that case, it looks likely that teams would be awarded a point if their match falls by the wayside.

In the meantime, Warrington coach Steve Price believes clubs should do everything possible to keep matches going. He said: “We have a responsibility to the game to try and keep it afloat. I’d hate to see it come crashing down.”

Clubs can ask for a postponement if six or more players are unable to play due to positive tests or being put into self- isolation through test and trace.

The Wolves had seven players in that category last week, plus another four players unavailable for other reasons, but fulfilled their fixture against Hull. They won 37- 12 and will again be below strength for Thursday’s clash with Castleford. Price said: “Our club put the game before itself because we had every right to not play.” ❑ WIGAN’S game at Catalans on Saturday

– the first with a crowd allowed in – could be at risk. A Warriors player has tested positive and if that number rises the game in Perpignan may be postponed.
