Just for tonight I want to keep Christian quiet

ERIKSEN REUNION SPURS ON DIER

- By Jeremy Cross

ERIC DIER is relishing his reunion with Christian Eriksen when England meet Denmark in Copenhagen tonight.

Dier knows the great Dane well after becoming close friends with him during their time together at Tottenham.

He has kept in touch with Eriksen since the midfielder left Spurs to join Inter Milan in January – and admits he will present a huge threat to Gareth Southgate’s men in the Nations League group game.

Eriksen has struggled to make an impact in Italy, starting only eight league games for the Serie A runners- up.

However, Dier knows that the 28- year- old, who scored 69 goals in 305 games for Spurs, remains one of the best midfielders in world football on his day.

The defender said: “It will be a difficult game. Denmark have a lot of good players and some I know well from the Premier League.

“They have been very competitive for quite a few years. So we expect a tough game. Christian is a very good friend of mine and we speak often. We had a good relationship at Tottenham and he is a fantastic player with so much quality.

“You go through a transition when you go to a new team in a new country and with all the coronavirus stuff and the impact of that, it must have been a very difficult time for him. But he tells me he’s settled in well and is enjoying it.” Dier is on a mission to help the Three Lions win a major tournament.

The Spurs player said: “It would be a great milestone for us. That’s the ambition – to try to win something with the national team. We want to go one step further, get to finals and start winning competitions.”

Denmark boss Kasper Hjulmand admits he is disappointed England stars Mason Greenwood and Phil Foden have let football down. The pair will miss tonight’s clash after being disciplined and d sent home from Iceland – and Hjulmand, right, admits ts Greenwood and Foden n could have put the e game at risk after breaching coronavirus s protocols.

The manager said: “I only got the information ion stepping into the press conference, so I didn’t hear about what happened exactly, I didn’t hear about how the bubble was broken and what the consequences could be.

“But I think it’s very important that we stay in the principles, in the protocols that we have been given. It’s about football and the survival of football. I think that we are still able to play is very important.

“There’s been a lot of thi things going on so we can actu actually play these matches, so we h have to be focused and live up to the protocols.”
