India building collapse kills 10
A BUILDING collapsed killing at least 10 people with many injured in India.
The four- storey residential property was due for repairs which had been delayed due to the lockdown.
Up to 25 people are feared to be trapped under rubble in a suburb of the country’s financial capital of Mumbai in the Maharashtra state.
Rescue services are looking for survivors after at least 11 people were injured. Pankaj Ashiya, the commissioner of Bhiwandi in the Thane district said the building was more than 30 years old and needed repair. Indian prime minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences. He said: “Praying for a quick recovery of those injured.
“Rescue operations are under way and all possible assistance is being provided to the affected.”
Collapses are common in India during the monsoon season, when heavy rains weaken foundations of old or poorly constructed buildings.
